3. Dads Ultimate Buffet

One of the goals is to try 10 new restaurants so going to Reds BBQ (in the UK) restaurant is one to tick off of the list. It was really not my type of place. Loud, tables tightly packed in, no reservation policy (how is turning people away all the time a good thing? I would end up never going back) and basically a menu full of red meat when I only eat chicken and am mostly vegetarian! It was doomed to failure and the reason I turned it down in the first place. However my Jewish vegetarian friend had managed to find something on the menu so if she could do it surely I could too?

We both ended up with Vegemac – which sounded to us like macaroni cheese. It was macaroni cheese but with some kind of goulash on top! However the meal came with fries and an extra side (slaw for me and corn on the cob for her) and the whole thing was a giant meal for a small price. Despite being a fusspot and picking all the tomatoes out of the goulash bit the meal was very nice. I’d like to say I ate everything but truth was the meal was actually too big. That’s actually a compliment as I would rather have a good meal with too much food than a bad one that leaves me feeling hungry because there is not enough. I am never gonna be a nouvelle cuisine kind of girl!

As mentioned it was noisy. On a table of eight (set lengthways rather than a round table) you could speak to the person next to you but that was it. This was a shame when I missed the scandal of one person ordering the expensive wine, drinking most of it and then wanting to split the bill with the other 2 wine drinkers!

I think though while it isn’t a place I would normally go to and maybe won’t choose for myself going forward, the food was enjoyable and fit a small budget (the steaks were averaging £18 which I’m informed is about average). We went at 4.30 in the afternoon and it was already packed with customers so for anyone reading this who happens to be in Leeds, England – go early!
